If you have eczema, you’re not alone. According to the Eczema Society of Canada, approximately 15% – 20% of the population suffer from the skin condition. Many people who have eczema develop the condition in childhood, and it never resolves. As a result, it is a lifelong problem that, when severe, can be debilitating. The itchiness, irritation, inflammation, and susceptibility to infection makes eczema a serious concern that isn’t just visually unattractive – it can negatively impact your quality of life.
While you may never be able to get rid of your eczema, it can be successfully controlled to the point where you don’t even think you have it anymore. Experts say that the most effective eczema treatment is to elevate and maintain your skin’s moisture levels. You should also avoid exposing your skin from anything that damages the skin and depletes moisture levels, such as UV rays, harsh detergents and even long hot baths.
Tips:
Make sure after bathing, you slather on a thick, rich moisturizer immediately after towelling off (pat dry – don’t rub). Choose a moisturizer that is fragrance-free to avoid irritation.
Use a humidifier during the cooler, arid months. The added moisture in the air will help your skin from becoming too parched.
Don’t scratch itchy spots. Scratching tends to make the area itchier, and increases the risk of infection.
