How DOES Belkyra® work?
Belkyra® is an injectable treatment based on deoxycholic acid, a chemical substance that can be found naturally in the human body. Deoxycholic acid destroys fat cells (technically known as adipocytes and lipocytes) by disrupting their membranes. When the membranes are no longer intact, the contents of the fat cells are released. These contents are free fatty acids and glycerol. Your body takes these away to be processed as waste matter.
The fat that has been destroyed never returns, which means you’ll enjoy permanent results from your Belkyra® treatment. Only small amounts of fat are dissolved during your injection so you won’t experience any negative impact on your liver or kidneys following this non-invasive treatment.

Belkyra/Kybella is the first non-surgical injectable for reducing chin fat. It contains deoxycholic acid, a natural molecule that breaks down fat and prevents its accumulation under the chin.

The injections cause only mild discomfort, but after the treatment, you may feel intense heat in the treated area. To help alleviate this sensation, it is advisable to apply an ice pack to the area for 10-15 minutes following your procedure.
Patients should avoid ibuprofen or acetaminophen before the appointment to prevent bruising. The procedure occurs in an outpatient session, with a topical numbing agent applied to ease discomfort at the injection site. The number of injections varies; most patients need 20, but up to 50 might be required, which could be done in one or multiple sessions.
It takes approximately 12 weeks or at least two sessions before you start noticing significant effects. However, you’ll typically see the maximum results within four to six weeks following the treatments.
Each session is efficiently completed within 20 to 30 minutes, making it convenient and time-effective for patients with busy schedules.
Post-treatment downtime varies; patients may feel heat in the treated area. Applying an ice pack for 10-15 minutes is advised. Swelling usually lasts a week, and there might be pain and bruising after the first treatment, so we recommend considering this when planning social or work engagements.
Yes, the effects of Belkyra/Kybella are permanent. When administered, it initiates the breakdown of fat cells. Once these cells are destroyed, they lose their ability to store fat permanently.
