If you’re a smoker, the acne that hinders your complexion may be a result of your habit, according to a study conducted by researchers at Rome’s San Gallicano Dermatological Institute – and it has found that women are more susceptible to developing the condition, dubbed “smoker’s acne”.

Results of the study, published in the British Journal of Dermatology, discovered that of the 1,000 women aged 25 to 50 years old examined, 42% of the smokers had acne, while 90% of the nonsmokers didn’t. The chances of developing acne as an adult were also four times higher for smokers if they had acne as a teen.

Smoker’s acne is characterized by blocked pores, blackheads and whiteheads. It has been labeled as NIA (non-inflammatory acne), and as a result, does not include the formation of pustules.

Another study released back in 2001 found that of the 896 participants examined, acne was more prevalent in smokers. Furthermore, the more they smoked, the worse their acne became.

On the flipside however, there have been some studies that found that smoking can improve or even prevent the development and presence of acne. So, in the end, the verdict is still out on this one. But what do know for sure is that smoking can cause wrinkles, lines, sagging and make the complexion dull. Skin Tightening to the rescue!
