You know that acne isn’t just a skin condition that affects teenagers, because you have it even as a mature woman. So what’s causing your breakouts?
There are several causes of acne, but it’s difficult to say why you’re breaking out exactly. It could be one or more of these factors:
1. Hormones
Testosterone triggers an increase in sebum production, which can lead to clogged pores. The bacteria that feed off of sebum flourish in these clogged pores, and that’s how you get a pimple. Whenever testosterone levels spike, look out for breakouts! You may also increase levels through your diet – for example, non-organic dairy products may cause hormonal fluctuations because cows are often fed hormones. Another factor in irregular hormones is the medical condition, Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS).
2. Sugar
Sugar has been linked to inflammation, and that can definitely contribute to breakouts.
3. Stress
Stress triggers cortisol production, aka the stress hormone. With that comes increased production of oil.
A successful acne treatment relies first on figuring out what may cause your skin condition.
