The oil in our skin is produced by sebaceous glands which are located deep within the skin’s layers. This oil is then transferred to the other layers through the pores, where it is deposited on to the surface. Generally, the more oil that is produced by your sebaceous glands, the larger your pores become to accommodate the amount. (However, as you age, the pores become enlarged not by oil production but rather by the natural decrease in skin elasticity as related by the effects of the aging process.)

Where Your Sebaceous Glands Are Most Active
As you may already know, the areas on your body that you’ll find the most oil produced tend to be on your face, chest and back. These are where the glands are most numerous. Because higher oil production makes a more favourable environment for the bacteria that cause acne to develop, these areas are also where you’ll find breakouts to more frequently occur.

Oil production is governed by a variety of factors, primarily your genetics, hormones and  stress. Minor factors that may also contribute include certain types of food and particular lifestyle habits.
