A Diagram of Skin Structure

Starting from the bottom is the hypodermis, primarily made up of fatty tissue. The hypodermis serves to support the other two layers of skin that sit on top.

The layer of skin that sits right on top of the hypodermis is called the dermis. The dermis is comprised of collagen and elastin, those two things that anyone interested in fighting off the signs of aging always talk about, and for good reason. Collagen and elastin are responsible for maintaining the skin’s shape and elasticity. When we’re young, collagen and elastin are abundant. Unfortunately, aging decreases amounts, and that’s why wrinkles and sagging occur – because the dermis is no longer able to maintain healthy shape and elasticity.  Aging also negatively affects the ability of the dermis to produce natural oils. A skincare product like Platine can actually boost collagen levels by patented peptide technology.

And finally, we get to the epidermis, the top layer of the skin. Skin cells are replaced in this layer. Aging slows down this process by 100% – ouch! Laser skin treatments like photofacial rejuvenation help accelerate this process.
